Furst Grade

Did you recently add an older puppy to your home between the ages of 4 months and 8 months of age, or has your little pup grown up right before your eyes?

Our Furst Grade puppy program is the perfect way to help guide your puppy into adulthood.

Designed for our older puppies, this highly structured Day Training program focuses on nice manners, socialization, and basic obedience training, while still ensuring a positive social experience!

This program is not designed to address aggressive or severely reactive behavior.
Please call us with any questions or concerns. We are happy to help!

We treat every puppy as an individual and will train/work at their pace and at their level of comfortability, while also considering fear periods and breed-specific behaviors.

This program's focus:

Socialization

Socialization; by far the most important aspect of puppyhood and our focus here at Furst Steps. We are here to make sure it is done right and effectively by introducing your puppy properly and positively to as many stimuli* as we can in and out of our facility, ensuring to go at your puppy's pace and making sure they are having fun!

Time alone

Even though your older puppy’s socialization window may be coming to a close, or may have already closed, depending on their age, it is still CRITICALLY important to continue socialization and training through adolescence and beyond.

We teach basics like sit, down, place, come, stay, leave it, release word, & loose leash walking. Depending on skill level, this will also work up to include some distractions, distance, and duration.

We also heavily focus on calm behavior, nice manners, impulse control, recall, name association, targeting, relationship building games, confidence building activities and more!

What you do at home matters.
Parents and family members are just as important to teach as the puppy, so don’t worry, we don’t leave you out!
Puppies are most successful with consistency, patience, and practice. What you do at home to reinforce what your puppy learns at school determines your puppy’s success rate.

Included with Furst Grade enrollment:

Weekly report cards so you can stay as up to date with your puppy’s progress as possible
One private Orientation at our facility (to be completed before your puppy’s “furst” day)
One private 1 hr Graduation Lesson once puppy completes program.

Enrolling all breeds ages 4 months to 8 months
You must have had your new puppy in your home for a minimum of 7 days before enrolling them in School. This allows you to get to know your puppy, gives you an idea of what you need help or guidance with, and allows your puppy to settle in and meet their new family. Should your puppy have been exposed to any disease/illness prior to coming to their new home, symptoms would show within those 7 days.
Orientation must be completed before your puppy’s “furst” day. This is where we will go over all program information, answer your questions and have a mini crash course on all things puppy!

Vaccine & Health Requirements

Over 16 weeks old/4 months- required to have at least 2-3 sets of DHLPP/DA2PP vaccinations (specifically Distemper, Parvo and Adenovirus)-  must have had 1st vaccination a minimum of 7 days prior to start of your program and keep up to date with vet recommended vaccine schedule
◼ Rabies required at/after 6 months of age (can be given sooner)
◼ Recent fecal test results indicating “negative” for parasites from your veterinarian
◼ Bordetella vaccine and Parainfluenza vaccine are recommended
◼ On monthly parasite and heartworm prevention per vet recommendations
A daily health check before being admitted into School for the day to ensure all puppies stay safe and healthy.
◼ During the health check, puppies are examined closely for hot spots, rashes, fleas, and other signs that may indicate a health concern like red eyes, a runny nose, inflamed gums, coughing, concerning lethargy, etc. Any puppy exhibiting a potential health concern will not be allowed to attend school until the problem is resolved per your veterinarian. This is in the best interest of the sick puppy, as well as any other puppies enrolled at Furst Steps.
Should we notice something after your puppy has been dropped off, your puppy will be isolated and crated and parents will be immediately called to pick the puppy up (we will also call your Emergency Contact should we not be able to reach you)
All vaccine and health requirements must be met prior to being accepted into any Furst Steps training program.
